Robots could help detect cancer in less than a second, trials suggest
Artificial intelligence might recognize cancers in under a minute, modern research suggests.
The research involved bowel cancer – the 4 th most popular form of the disease in the UK, with more than 40, 000 diagnoses per year. In a trial, the AI device managed to identify tumors from endoscopy photos with 94 % accuracy and reliability.
Experts used the programme to determine 306 colorectal polyps – growths in the bowel which may or may not be cancerous – in two hundred and fifty males and females. It took less than a minute for the program to analyze every magnified endoscopic image and determine whether or not the polyp was malignant.
The programme functioned by matching every growth against more than up to 30,000 photos that were used for machine mastering.
British health specialists said the findings from Showa University in Yokohama, Japan, introduced at United European Gastroenterology ( UEG ) 7 days in Barcelona, were encouraging.Cautioning that the program has yet to obtain regulatory approval, they said the technologies might spare many patients from needless surgery if further trials succeed.
Dr . Claire Knight, from Cancer Researching UK, said: “AI or virtual reality are opening multiple exciting locations with a journey to improve our understanding and treatment of cancer.
“The technology in such a presentation could help reduce the overtreatment of bowel growths, called polyps, by supporting doctors decide if they need removing or can be left alone. But it requires testing in much larger teams of folks 1st before we understand it’s possibilities .”
